Alex Sapir is a Russian-born New York City real estate tycoon and business associate of Donald Trump. He is the son of the late Soviet-born real estate tycoon Tamir Sapir, who left the Soviet Union in 1973 and opened an electronics store in New York City in 1976 that “became a wholesale outlet for Soviet diplomats, KGB agents and Politburo members.” After the fall of the Soviet Union the elder Sapir parlayed Soviet contacts he had made in New York into a vast real estate empire, rumored to have been fueled by Russian mafia connections and money laundering – rumors that he repeatedly denied. Alex Sapir took over the Sapir Organization when his father was reportedly no longer able to run it. 1New York Times, Aug 9, 2000
